Looking back at Summer camps 2009
ORCTV held its first Summer Youth Video Camps. The camp was a great success. The kids loved it. The youth camp started out with media literacy. Kids learned how advertisers go after different target audiences and how commercials contribute to TV program dollars. We then moved into a print exercise studying magazines and how they advertise to people. Finally the kids did a “violence in cartoons” exercise where they counted acts of violence and tallied up how many acts an average kid sees in a day, month, and year. We discussed the effects of such exposure.
Next the kids learned digital camcorders, tripods and audio. The kids then developed and wrote scripts and storyboards for their field productions. The kids came up with the ideas and wrote the scripts themselves. The next day we videotaped the skits and then learned how to edit on iMovie and Final Cut Pro editing software. The kids made all edit decisions themselves. The next week the kids learned studio production including, audio, graphics, switching and directing. Each child learned every crew position and made a final video to keep.
It was an exciting and fulfilling camp. The kids had a great time as they learned valuable technical and cognitive skills. This camp was made possible by a grant from the Marion, Mattapoisett & Rochester Massachusetts Cultural Council. We thank them very much for their generous support.
